Walnut Creek International Half Marathon
Date: December 12, 2015
Location: Walnut Creek, California
Distance: 13.1 miles
Made my return to the Walnut Creek International Half Marathon in 2015 to complete the California Half & Full Marathon Series. I had previously run the race in 2011 and 2012, completing the Northern California Half Marathon Series both years.
Amy and I arrived in Walnut Creek earlier than expected and sat in the car for nearly an hour before making our way towards the start. The air was cold, but not near as cold as we thought it would be. We found a group of BNB Runners and took our traditional pre-race picture.
The race started on time and we were off. I would run the entire race with BNB Runner Jason Davis. We started off strong with a run/walk ratio of 2:1. We were on track to finish in under 3 hours with half of the race to go. Then we met the hills.
We inverted our ratio of 2:1 to 1:2 run/walk. As the hills got steeper, our walking increased. I was not prepared for the hills.
Shortly after mile 7 we spotted an iPhone on the road. I picked it up and was going to turn it in at the end of the race when it suddenly vibrated. I looked at the phone and it was a text message with an image preview. It was a photo of two women who had just taken a selfie at the mile 7 marker. They happened to be nearby and I was able to return the phone. It was nice to be able to find it’s owner so quickly.
Jason and I continued on eventually finishing the race with a time of 3:23:07. This was not quite how I wanted to finish the year, but I got it done. Now it is time to prepare for 2016.
